Argentina's Javier Milei has been accused of hypocrisy for orchestrating a substantial increase in presidential pay while pushing through an austerity package, in a scandal that has rocked the right-wing populist's government. It reflected a 48% increase in presidential pay from January. The libertarian economist, who has often been compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump, sought to defend the pay increase by claiming it was automatically triggered by a decree signed by former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner 14 years ago. Opposition lawmakers, however, said the president's own signature was used on a February decree that enabled the pay increase.

☆ Argentine ETF trading surges after election, led by small investors

The Global X MSCI Argentina ETF , which offers exposure to a basket of the country's most liquid stocks, soared more than 13% on Monday and hit its highest level since September. While the South American country's markets are closed on Monday for a local holiday, U.S.-listed shares of Argentinian companies also surged in U.S. trading. The gains for the ETF came through large amounts of small trades, Todd Sohn, an ETF analyst at Strategas in New York, said. By mid-morning, the value of trading in the ETF had topped $11 million, compared with average of about $1 million a day throughout 2023. "These small country funds are ideal vehicles for small day traders who jump on events" like Sunday's presidential election in Argentina, Sohn said.

Bullrich's public backing of Milei quickly stoked divisions in the coalition she led, which months ago was the odds-on favorite to replace Massa's Peronists. Gerardo Morales, head of the more moderate Radical Civic Union party within Bullrich's coalition, derided her endorsement as "irresponsible," adding that the party will not endorse Milei or Massa. Analysts suggest the overall impact of Bullrich's endorsement will be limited, as some of her supporters will probably break for Massa.
